San Valentín de Terni/ El Día del Amor Y la Amistad

San Valentín Obispo de Terni, mártir

Fiesta: 14 de Febrero

La historia mas creíble sobre Valentín nos dice que fue Obispo de Terni, en la Italia central y que aproximadamente en el año 268 fue martirizado por orden del emperador Romano Claudio II, quien mando a procesar a Valentín por casar a las parejas bajo el rito católico aun cuando el emperador lo había prohibido, al parecer el gobernante pensaba que los soldados casados no eran tan eficaces y si mas susceptibles que los solteros.

Su admiración y veneración creció rápidamente en Terni y sus alrededores así como en Roma lugar donde el Papa Julio I mando a construir una basílica para San Valentín (aunque probablemente no fuera para Valentín de Terni). Durante la misma época había un sacerdote en Roma también nombrado Valentín y también martirizado. Ambos fueron sepultados en la vía Flaminiana entrando a Roma donde hasta la fecha están, aunque a diferentes distancias de la ciudad. Existía un tercer Valentín quien sufrió en África junto con varios compañeros, pero no se sabe de el.

Ya en el siglo V se celebraba la fiesta de San Valentín el 14 de Febrero convirtiendo a la fiesta Pagana de Lupercalia que conmemoraba Fauno, el Dios Pagano de la fertilidad y el bosque y se festejaba los 15 de Febrero. Lupercalia se celebraba para purificar la tierra y una buena cosecha y fertilidad y salud del ganado.

A San Valentín se le representa vestido de obispo, auxiliando a tullidos y a epilépticos, es por esto que se le nombro como el patrón contra la epilepsia y los desmayos.

Las tradiciones que ahora celebramos durante esta fecha tienen su origen en Francia e Inglaterra durante los tiempos Medievales donde se celebraba el día de San Valentín para intercambiar regalos especialmente en los que respecta a los enamorados. En Alemania es uno de los días del año en que se predice el tiempo como lo es el 2 de Febrero en los Estados Unidos.

Otra de las tradiciones denotaba el 14 de Febrero como la segunda semana del segundo mes del año en que las aves se empezaban a emparejar. En el año 1380 Geoffery Chaucer, poeta y escritor que escribió:

(El presente enviado el Día de San Valentín que es cuando cada ave se acerca para escoger su pareja.)

Por eso es que llegamos a celebrar esta fecha como el más indicado para declarar nuestros sentimientos de amor y de afecto a las personas que más nos importan. El día de San Valentín es popular en los países de habla Inglesa; todos los centros comerciales se visten de corazones rojos y ofrecen mercancía y artículos alusivos al amor y la amistad que se venden como si fuera el fin del mundo. ¿A caso Usted pensaba llegar a casa con las manos vacíos?

Celebrated February 14th

The most credible account of Valentine in history states that he was a bishop in Terni in central Italy and that approximately in the year 268 he was martyred by order of the Roman Emperor Claudius II for having married couples under the catholic rite after the emperor had prohibited this. It appears that the government thought that married soldiers were more susceptible than and not as efficient as their single counterparts.

Admiration and veneration for him grew rapidly in Terni and the surrounding areas as well as in Rome where Pope Julius I ordered the construction of the basilica of Saint Valentine (though it probably was not meant for Valentine of Terni). During the same period there was a priest in Rome who was also named Valentine and who was also martyred. Both were buried along the Flamian Way as it enters Rome, but at different distances from the city, where they remain even today. There was a third Valentine in Catholic history who was a priest in Africa who suffered and died together with several companions, but nothing more is known of him. In about the fifth century is when Saint Valentine’s Day was celebrated as a Catholic substitution for the Pagan holiday Lupercalia commemorating Faunus, god of fertility and forest which was celebrated on February 15th. Lupercalia was celebrated to purify the land thus assuring a good harvest and health and fertility for their herds. St. Valentine is represented dressed as a bishop and helps the crippled and epileptics, for this he is known as the patron saint of epilepsy and fainting spells.

The traditions that we follow in present day have their origins in Medieval France and England where couples began exchanging gifts. In Germany, Valentine’s Day is also a day for weather prediction just as February 2nd is Groundhog’s day in the U.S. It had been observed that the 14th of February (or about the middle of the second month of the year) the birds began to pair off. In 1380 Geoffrey Chaucer, noted among many poets and authors of his time wrote:

For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne's day
Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.

This is how we came to know this date as the perfect time to express our sentiments of love and affection to those who are most important to us. St. Valentine’s Day is very popular in English speaking countries where all of the stores dress in red hearts and offer merchandise and allusive articles that sell as if the world was about to end.
